Questions About Our Services and Supports:
What’s the difference between a Psychotherapist, Psychologist, and Psychiatrist?
While all three support mental health, their roles differ:
Psychotherapists provide counseling and therapy to help individuals process emotions, behaviors, and life experiences.
Psychologists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions and often conduct psychological testing and evaluations.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication.
At Beautiful Dreamers, services may include therapy, evaluations, and collaboration with psychiatric providers when medication support is appropriate.
What are the differences in services at each location?
Services vary slightly by location:
Florida – Services are provided fully via telehealth.
Buford, Georgia – Offers comprehensive therapeutic services, special education advocacy, and professional services.
U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix & St. Thomas) – While therapeutic and educational support is available, Beautiful Dreamers is highly engaged in training, professional development, and speaking across agencies, organizations, and community systems.
Each location is structured to meet the needs of the communities served.
What should I expect in counseling?
Counseling is a collaborative process. You can expect:
A safe, confidential space
Open conversation without judgment
Goal setting based on your needs
Support that moves at a pace that feels manageable
You do not need to have the “right words” — part of the process is discovering them together.
How long should therapy take?
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Therapy length depends on:
Your goals
The concerns being addressed
Frequency of sessions
Progress over time
Some people benefit from short-term support, while others engage in longer-term therapy.
Is counseling for everyone?
Counseling can benefit many people, but readiness matters. Counseling works best when individuals are open to reflection, honesty, and growth. If you’re unsure, a consultation can help determine if counseling is the right next step.
Are there different counseling techniques?
Yes. Therapists may use different approaches depending on client needs, including:
Cognitive and behavioral strategies
Trauma-informed approaches
Family systems perspectives
Movement & Rhythm Therapy
Play-based interventions for children
Your therapist will work with you to determine what approach best supports your goals.
Does it matter if I have a male or female therapist?
What matters most is feeling comfortable, heard, and respected. Some clients have preferences based on personal experiences or comfort level, and those preferences are valid. The therapeutic relationship itself is the most important factor.
How long does a psychological evaluation take?
Psychological evaluations vary based on purpose and complexity. They may take:
Several hours across one or multiple sessions
Additional time for scoring, interpretation, and reporting
Your provider will explain the process before the evaluation begins.
Is medication for mental illness different from typical medications?
Yes. Mental health medications work by influencing brain chemistry and neurological functioning. Finding the right medication — if needed — often requires careful monitoring, collaboration, and adjustment.
Medication decisions are individualized and should always involve a qualified medical provider.
How will I know if I need medication?
Medication may be considered if:
Symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning
Therapy alone is not providing enough relief
A provider recommends medication after assessment
Therapy and medication often work best together, but medication is not required for everyone.
How can I get licensed to become a therapist?
Becoming licensed typically involves education, supervised clinical experience, and passing licensure exams.
Beautiful Dreamers offers clinical supervision services for professionals seeking guidance, mentorship, and support toward licensure.
What is an IEP?
An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a legally binding document that outlines specialized educational services and supports for a student with a disability. It is designed to ensure the student receives appropriate accommodations and instruction.
Is there an age limit for Special Education services?
Special education services typically support students from early childhood through high school. However, transition planning and certain supports may extend into early adulthood depending on eligibility and need.
Additional Questions You May Have:
Do you accept insurance?
Insurance acceptance varies by service and location. Please contact us directly for current options.
Is everything confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a core part of ethical care, with limited legal exceptions that will be explained clearly.
Can parents be involved in therapy?
Yes, depending on the client’s age and treatment plan, family involvement may be part of the process.
What if I don’t know what service I need?
That’s okay. We can help guide you during an initial conversation to determine the best fit.
